Most people really aren’t comfortable being honest about their sexuality. The sort of things most of us feel safe with others knowing are those which are understood to be done by almost everyone. Honesty is generally punished with regard to sexuality. I remember how pervasive accusations of homosexuality were throughout my elementary school years. “You jerk off? Ewww, gross, you’re a fag.” That’s funny now, but back then it had a chilling effect on many people’s capacity to be honest about sex, gay and straight. For those who were actually gay it must have been an absolutely oppressive, Orwellian nightmare. For the rest of us it set clear and extremely narrow guidelines for what is acceptably masculine. And of course it surely caused many of us to turn our sexualities inward, and led to a longing for a special person with whom we could finally unburden our desires. The things written about in your post must be incredibly common, but honesty with regard to them is so scarce that what you have written is actually something precious and rare. This blog has the potential to inspire others to be more honest about themselves, and to become closer to those they love. It has already inspired me that way.

Sometimes it appears that the presence of any rules with regard to sexuality immediately creates a situation in which the transgression of those rules is eroticized. I would quite expect that feminists are somewhat more likely to have forced sex fantasies than non-feminists, and that is clearly because the feminist feels the presence of these rules more keenly. There frequently seems to be a basic incompatibility between sexuality and politics; on one hand it would be irresponsible to derive one’s politics from personal sexuality, and on the other it seems impossible to derive one’s sexuality from political commitments. Feminism is a pretty clear case of applied ethics but remains a cold wind in the chamber of love. Perhaps some brilliant thinker, with a profound understanding of gender and human relations, will present a convincing theory which reconciles feminism with personal sexuality. My hunch however, is that this will not happen. We are left with no choice but to embrace the contradiction, and affirm our sexuality and our politics simultaneously, or to reject either of the two.

“Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.”
    - Walt Whitman

Your post this week was wonderful. Melancholic, ecstatic, showy and structurally complex- it’s the F Minor Ballade of postings. I’m very engaged to see where you could possibly go from here. I’m sure the South Florida Lawyers agree. Am I right guys?
